Sky's decision to move our trip to Port Vale to Monday for TV has left us with a blank weekend. But never fear, there is still plenty of football in Oxfordshire this weekend for yellows fans to get their fix. This Saturday is the annual Non-League Day event, timed to coincide with the international break for the Premier League and Championship, and clubs the length and breadth of the country are preparing to celebrate the Non-League game. So, with that in mind, why not head down to your local Non-League club and get involved this weekend?
Starting within the city itself, Oxford City are offering an excellent Non-League Weekend ticket. For £13 you can see the their Conference North match against Workington on Saturday, followed on Sunday by Oxford City Nomads v Windsor in the FA Vase. City have taken to life in the Conference like a duck to water, and have confounded pre-season expectations that they may struggle. They are currently fourth in the league and nicely entrenched in the play-off chase with six wins from their first 11 games.
Banbury United welcome Weymouth to the Spencer Stadium for what could prove to be a very important match. Banbury have found life difficult so far this season, currently sitting precariously just above the relegation zone, though there were definitely reasons for positivity after they picked up a draw against Frome during the week. Weymouth have similarly struggled and are currently only above Banbury on goal difference and the outcome of this match could go a long way to determining which side can beat the drop this season. If more persuasion was needed, chairman Jed McCrory is offering to buy beers for the first 286 people who introduce themselves to him on Saturday!
Abingdon United are also at home on Saturday and look set to hand a debut to ex-Oxford youth team product Aaron Woodley, who has joined this week from Banbury. Abingdon Town are also at home on Saturday to Highworth Town in the Hellenic League in what looks set to be a relegation six-pointer even at this early stage of the season. Unfortunately, both matches in Abingdon kick off at 3, but with the two grounds being separated by just a short walk enthusiastic groundhoppers can watch a half at both matches!
Other local Hellenic League sides at home on Saturday include high-flying Witney Town, who host Ascot United in the FA Vase and OUFC season ticket holders can get in for just £3.50. Thame United, fresh from their remarkable comeback victory over Witney on Tuesday, host Fairford Town in the FA Vase at their excellent ASM Stadium and will be hosting a family fun day, including a bouncy castle and barbecue.
If you're planning to attend any of these matches we'd love to hear from you. You can email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or tweet us @TBFUTH.
