What the Stats Say...Southend

No question about it, we need to win this one. Southend are the final visitors to the Kassam in the regular season and while failure to win could mean the end of our playoff hopes, the Shrimpers also need victory to maintain their hopes of automatic promotion. Matt Peck has been trawling (no pun intended) the archives to bring you the stats ahead of the game.

OTHER STATS

Oxford have had 17 draws this season, only Colchester, Scunthorpe and Cardiff have had more in the top 5 divisions of English Football.

James Constable might lose out on top scorer for the first time in 3 years to Asa Hall, who has netted 6 times since Constable last scored, back in February and has 7 goals to Beano’s 11.

The last league fixture between the two at the Kassam ended with new year defeat for the U’s. It was the first time Oxford had dropped points since November, and indeed they would continue to gain maximum points until the game away to Northampton at the end of January. A blip in an otherwise productive festive period.

It was Southend’s first victory at the Kassam since 2002, and only their 5th away win at Oxford since the fixture began in 1965.

The clash has usually produced goals, with 32 goals from 15 games with only one 0-0 coming in 1979.

Southend have scored the most goals away from home this season at 39, they have however conceded 30 on their travels. Only Cheltenham and Aldershot from the top half of the table have conceded more away from home.

Oxford have had 5 more clean sheets than this time last season showing a vastly improved defensive display and have actually scored the same number of goals after 44 games as they did after 44 last season.

Dean Morgan and Ryan Clarke have both turned out for the Seasiders, albeit only on a handful of occasions. Morgan scored 3 times in 11 appearances, all coming in the FA Cup, including one goal against Oxford in their 3-0 victory over the U’s in 2007. Clarke made just one appearance for Southend.
